Lifelong LearningThe retirement
|
Some two centuries ago, Thomas Jefferson returned to his Charlottesville home for a retirement that included, among other pastimes, horticultural and scientific experimenting, writing countless letters, and, not incidentally, designing the University of Virginia, his proudest legacy. At Westminster-Canterbury, Jefferson’s spirit lives on in a community dedicated to lifelong learning. For some, that might mean attending lectures and continuing education classes. For others, it could mean a continued zest for travel, for discovering new places and exploring horizons. Still others step forward to share their own wisdom and experience through volunteer work. Our Calendar offers you a full schedule of lectures, performances, seminars, classes, trips, and unique, behind-the-scenes opportunities available only to our residents. Within our community you’ll find an extensive library, computer facilities, a woodworking shop, a potter’s wheel and kiln, a darkroom, an art studio, a multipurpose performance and lecture space with a grand piano restored through resident gifts, communal gardening areas and a changing display of work by local artists in the hallway outside our Westminster Grille. A bird sanctuary with walking paths and a pond is also on the horizon. These ADA-approved (Americans with Disabilities Act) walking paths will include landscaped, graded terraces that lead to a trail around the pond.
